110 people after stroke
A 2018 study followed people in stroke rehabilitation, comparing groups with and without Semax. The authors reported higher blood BDNF levels and better recovery of everyday functioning in the Semax groups.
This was stroke rehabilitation, not addiction recovery. The abstract does not describe randomization or blinding, so it cannot give the same confidence as a well-controlled randomized trial.

A closer look at BDNF
In a rat study, Semax increased BDNF protein and activity in a related signaling pathway in the hippocampus, a brain region involved in learning and memory.
This helps explain the scientific interest. It does not establish improved memory, motivation, or focus in people taking Semax.

Different effects in different brain regions
A second rat study found that nasal Semax changed the activity of genes for BDNF and NGF, another nerve-support protein. Some signals increased; others decreased depending on the brain region.
The finding is more specific than “boosting the brain.” It shows biological activity, not demonstrated brain repair in humans.
